Nationally Recognized Firms Selected to Design Milwaukee’s First Arts-Focused Hotel

New York City-based Stonehill Taylor and Chicago-based One Design Company will create a bold vision for Marcus® Hotels & Resorts’ first-of-its-kind hotel project

MILWAUKEE, May 15, 2018. . . . . Excitement is building for Milwaukee’s newest downtown hotel focused on celebrating the arts. It was announced today that architecture and interior design firm Stonehill Taylor, based in New York City, and branding agency One Design Company, based in Chicago, will be tasked with reinventing the 221-room InterContinental Milwaukee, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, into an immersive arts-focused hotel.

Showcasing world-class artists from around the region and the world, the hotel will celebrate art in its many forms, including visual arts, music, theater, dance and literature. Working with Marcus Hotels & Resorts, the design teams will collaborate to blend Milwaukee’s renowned arts scene and cultural heritage into a creatively bold arts hotel that is unlike anything the market has seen before.

“To our knowledge, this will be one of the only hotel concepts in the United States that truly incorporates all forms of art throughout the entire hotel,” said Gregory S. Marcus, president and CEO of The Marcus Corporation. “In Stonehill Taylor and One Design Company, we believe we’ve found partners who share our vision, are daring, yet not afraid of subtlety, and have the experience to design more than a hotel – a true destination with a reimagined place in our community. Together with our collaborators, we will break boundaries and create an entirely new opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience Milwaukee through a different lens.”

The hotel will stand as a community hub with an original, boutique-hotel aesthetic and one-of-a-kind look reflective of the city’s diverse arts community. One Design Company will oversee the development of the hotel’s brand concept, including name, logo, identity systems and more, while Stonehill Taylor will spearhead the interior design for the reimagined hotel. Currently immersed in the initial research phase, both teams are collaborating with Marcus Hotels & Resorts to explore Milwaukee’s creative scene and institutions by taking in exhibits, meeting with artists and viewing performances, while also talking with visitors and residents alike about what stirs their imagination.

“We are thrilled to join Marcus Hotels & Resorts to bring a new hotel concept to downtown Milwaukee,” said Michael Suomi, principal of Stonehill Taylor. “This innovative hotel will celebrate the essence of Milwaukee’s thriving arts community, while incorporating curated pieces from well-known and up-and-coming artists alike. We are inspired by the team’s vision for this property and the impact it will have on its guests, associates and the community.”

“As a Milwaukee native with deep family ties to the local creative community, I couldn’t be more thrilled with the opportunity for the One Design team to collaborate on such an amazing and important property for the city. The chance to tap into creative talent and perspective from throughout the community, alongside the teams at Marcus Hotels and Stonehill Taylor, is astounding,” said David Sieren, design director and partner of One Design Company.

Opening in mid-2019, the completely redesigned property will serve as a hotel nestled within a dynamic, urban arts scene featuring:

• Art installations, exhibits and programming focused on both known and up-and-coming artists.
• Original furniture and amenities that themselves can be considered pieces of art.
• Locally-procured products that celebrate Milwaukee’s roots.
• One or more working studios where guests can share in the evolution of each artist’s work from an up-close and personal perspective.

“Milwaukee’s reputation as a culturally relevant and intellectually stimulating destination is growing daily, especially among travelers looking for a truly authentic experience,” concluded Marcus. “And nothing is more authentic than Milwaukee’s incredible arts community. Vibrant, diverse, challenging and welcoming are just a few ways I’d describe Milwaukee’s arts scene. When you pair that with our gorgeous landscape, thriving entertainment district and professional sports clubs, Milwaukee is quickly becoming one of our country’s most exciting places to visit.”

Marcus® Hotels & Resorts to Curate New Hotel Concept Celebrating the Arts

Milwaukee, Wis., January 16, 2018. . . . . Evoking the passion, power and purpose of Milwaukee’s flourishing arts scene, Marcus® Hotels & Resorts announced today that it is reinventing the 221-room InterContinental Milwaukee into a creatively bold independent arts hotel. Daring to blend impeccable hospitality with curated exhibits, contemporary installations and engrossing live performances, Milwaukee will soon be home to one of the country’s most immersive and inviting arts hotel experiences.

“The arts spark conversation and debate. The arts inspire and heal. They are part of our daily life, while also serving as an escape. And the arts bring people together, despite differing tastes, backgrounds and experiences,” said Greg Marcus, president and chief executive officer of The Marcus Corporation. “For generations, Milwaukee’s arts scene has been central to the city’s health, vibrancy and reputation as a culturally relevant home and destination. By reimagining this hotel’s place in our community, we aspire to serve as a welcoming, freeing space for those who wish to experience Milwaukee through an entirely different lens.”

Three key elements – the modern design of the hotel, its prime location in the heart of the city’s growing arts and entertainment district, and Milwaukee’s extraordinary creative community – will all come together to design an experience unlike any other. The curtain is expected to rise on the redesigned property in mid-2019, unveiling a hotel nestled within a dynamic, urban arts scene. Featuring collections and standalone pieces from international and local artists, both known and up-and-coming, the hotel will also serve as host to performing arts experiences. Building off the success of Marcus Hotels & Resorts’ ground-breaking Artist-in-Residence program at The Pfister Hotel, the property will also feature a similar working studio where guests can share in the evolution of each artist’s work up close and personal. Its on-site culinary destinations will celebrate local flavors and customs while creating a bite or sip that challenges tradition. And completing the experience, guests will not only be able to see and taste all that local artisans have to offer, but also touch and feel it through locally-procured products that celebrate our roots, and service that warmly envelops them from the moment they walk in the door.

The Marcus Corporation and its leadership team have long been avid supporters of the arts in Milwaukee, with the impact seen throughout the community. For example, years ago Steve Marcus, chairman of The Marcus Corporation, led the group that brought internationally renowned artist Robert Indiana to Milwaukee to paint the Mecca basketball floor, creating one of the largest canvases ever to national and lasting acclaim. The company helped lead the formation of the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) in Milwaukee, which today is the leading funding source for many performing arts organizations. It provided the lead donation for the campaign that led to the naming of the Marcus Center for Performing Arts, Milwaukee’s premier, multi-use performing arts venue. This past summer, Steve Marcus created and vigorously championed Sculpture Milwaukee, which is one of the largest urban outdoor sculpture galleries in the world. And, most recently, the company donated its ownership of the Warner Grand Theatre to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra to be used as its next performance venue.

“We have long held a deep-seated passion for how the arts enhance the vibrancy and interconnectedness of our communities,” concluded Marcus. “With this project, we saw a very special opportunity to push the envelope and create an entirely new concept that pays homage to the arts. Ultimately, our hope is that a visit or a stay at this hotel will inspire our guests to explore more of what’s possible and experience our community in a way that is more personal. So much so that when they leave, they are already planning their return to see what’s next.”

The AAA Four-Diamond Pfister® Hotel in Search of its Next Artist in Residence

Hotel Celebrates 10th Artist in 2018

Milwaukee, Wis., November 29, 2017 – The AAA Four-Diamond Pfister Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus Hotels & Resorts, is in search of its next Artist in Residence. Entering its 10th year, The Pfister Hotel’s internationally recognized Artist-in-Residence program is an opportunity for an artist to be at the forefront of Milwaukee’s art scene, showcasing his or her work in a studio gallery on the first floor of Milwaukee’s most prestigious hotel.

The Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence program allows local artists to share their work and interact with guests one-on-one in the studio gallery or at art receptions, gallery nights, classes and events hosted by the resident artist. The next artist, succeeding tintype photographer Margaret Muza, will move into the studio space April 1, 2018, and will continue working at the hotel for a one-year period.

Each year, a committee of influential art enthusiasts from throughout the Milwaukee community selects The Pfister’s resident artist from a pool of highly qualified candidates. The committee takes into account the artist’s vision for the gallery space, his or her body of work, artistic process, personality and a public vote. The selected artist works in The Pfister Hotel’s art studio and gallery that is open to hotel guests and the public. The program encourages visitors to interact with the artist, while watching the evolution of each piece of work firsthand.

“This coming year marks a special milestone as we welcome our 10th resident artist,” said Tim Smith, general manager of The Pfister Hotel. “The Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence program has touched hundreds of guests and residents over the years as we provide a one-of-a-kind, engaging experience that allows visitors to learn about new art forms and interact with our artist in a creative studio environment. Since our first artist was selected in 2009, our program has become nationally and internationally recognized, earning recognition from The New York Times, Globe and Mail and other top-tier publications. We are proud to have hosted a diverse group of talented artists including painters, fiber artists and photographers, and remember them by their legacy pieces that adorn the Pfister hallways. Each artist has had a role in our success and we are excited to welcome the next Artist in Residence who will make this year even more special.”

Margaret Muza, current resident artist, said the Artist-in-Residence program has given her a deeper perspective about herself as an artist and her photography. “Working in the historic Pfister Hotel has provided me with a great atmosphere to use my unique artform. From the gorgeous architecture of this timeless Milwaukee treasure to the hotel guests and staff I interact with, I’ve learned so much. This opportunity has allowed me to grow as an artist as I share the process of tintype photography with others.”

The deadline to apply for the program is December 14, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. CT. Interested artists can download the application online at http://www.thepfisterhotel.com/artist-in-residence.

In the years since its inception in 2009, The Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence program has been critically lauded as not only a pioneering Wisconsin Artist-in-Residence program, but as an example of a hotel taking its dedication to the local community above and beyond traditional expectations. With a deep appreciation and connection to the arts, launching an Artist-in-Residence program was a natural step for The Pfister Hotel, and in the years since, each artist that has held the residency has helped to grow and evolve the program to its current incarnation today. Marcus Hotels & Resorts has introduced similar Artist-in-Residence programs at additional owned proprieties including The Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City, Okla. and The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Neb.

About The Pfister Hotel
The Pfister Hotel has been the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee for over 120 years. Originally built in 1893 by businessman Guido Pfister, it was the most lavish hotel of its time. The hotel’s storied elegance had faded following World War II, until 1962, when Ben Marcus, founder of The Marcus Corporation, purchased this grand hotel out of bankruptcy. The Marcus family renovated and restored the hotel to its original glory, adding convention facilities, a parking garage and 23-story guest tower. The Pfister Hotel remains home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world, and offers an interactive augmented reality tour of pieces in this impressive collection.
Today the Pfister Hotel continues its tradition of gracious service and impeccable style, and has been recognized for 41 consecutive years by AAA as a Four-Diamond property. In 2017, The Pfister Hotel was ranked the No. 1 Best Milwaukee Hotel by U.S. News & World Report and was recognized as a Top Hotel in the Midwest in Condé Nast Traveler’s 30th annual Reader’s Choice Awards. This exceptional property is a member of two prestigious hotel organizations, Historic Hotels of America and Preferred Hotels & Resorts. The Pfister Hotel is located at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Milwaukee. For more information, please visit www.thepfisterhotel.com and follow the hotel on Facebook and Twitter (@PfisterHotel).
