The Pfister Hotel
At The Pfister Hotel, guests will be able to mingle with the hotel’s eighth Artist-in-Residence, Pamela Anderson, and get a glimpse of her work from the first three months of her residency.

“I have been exploring this elegant and historic hotel inside and out for inspiration for my Architecture Series. I am very much looking forward to sharing my interpretation of the spaces and structures in my paintings with guests during Gallery Night,” said Anderson.

Pfister Pop-Up Gallery Exhibits
The Pfister Hotel will host two pop-up gallery exhibits during July Gallery Night:

Show 1 – “Transformation, A Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) Juried Members Exhibition” The Coalition of Photographic Arts will feature 15 pieces from 15 photographers selected by curators from the Haggerty Museum of Art. Transformation is the perfect theme for the times as CoPA strives to fulfill its mission as a leading voice in photographic excellence.
Pieces in the exhibit will reflect the theme of transformation, which will come full circle as digital information is transferred to printable surfaces, selected by the curators to reflect their interpretation of the subject. The chosen method of printing transforms the imagery, completing the circle.

Show 2 – “Yosemite and the Tetons, 1958 and 2012”
In commemoration of the National Park Service Centennial, artist Tom Ferderbar will present photography from Yosemite 1958 and the Tetons 2012 in homage to the natural beauty of the great American West.

InterContinental Milwaukee Hotel
Gallerie M at InterContinental Milwaukee features Francis Annan Affotey’s exhibit, “Accra to Milwaukee: How New Environments Shape Artistry.” Affotey was a public-vote winner for the 2016-2017 Pfister Artist-in-Residence Program. Moving to Milwaukee from Accra, Ghana, Affotey’s exhibition will allow the viewer to travel with Affotey over the past seven years and see how each of his experiences gradually transformed his techniques, colors, subjects and motifs. His paintings allow the viewer to question how art is a tool to describe the world around us and to help us grasp a sense of place.

As a child in Accra, “poses” were part of daily life. Affotey shares how poses and images created a lasting impression on him. “I use poses to expose the paradox of everyday African life. By depicting a pose as semi-abstract, my paintings highlight both the mundane and the joy in everyday African life. Images that seem pitiful or sad to the outside world have much deeper implications. A woman feeding her family suggests pride, not inferiority. A child playing in a slum suggests friendship and imagination, not hopelessness. My artwork is meant to challenge those who only see Africa through the lenses of conflict, poverty and corruption,” said Affotey.

Beginning at 8:00 p.m., Affotey will be joined by two Latin dance groups that will present three performances for Gallery Night guests:
• The Salsabrositas is Wisconsin’s youngest Latin dance team that consists of over 20 ladies between the ages of 4 and 15 years old. They were recently awarded “Best in Show” at the Chicago International Salsa Congress.
• Under the direction of Danny Balderas, Salsabrosa is Milwaukee’s longest running Latin dance company. During their Gallery Night performance, they will be joined by several of the Salsabrositas for a teaser of their newest routine.
• Affotey and his amateur partner, Layanet Quijano, will perform a routine that garnered them “Best in Show” at the Chicago International Salsa Congress this year.

Candace Hunter Moves into Gallerie M August 11 – October 3
Another Pfister Artist-in-Residence public-vote winner, collage artist Candace Hunter, moves into Gallerie M on August 11. Upon seeing a post from the Huntington Library of the private journals of renowned fiction writer, Octavia E. Butler and her continued written affirmation, “So be it! See to it!,” Hunter immediately began work on visually translating the works of the foremost speculative fiction writer.

“As I began to think on new work for this show, Octavia consumed me. And then I saw her hand-written notes, her affirmations. These precious hand-written notes appealed to me as much as her finely crafted books – as if they were a personal directive to me. So be it. See to it. And the work began. The work is all collage, for collage is the medium for storytelling. It is my way of honoring this American story-teller,” said Hunter.

About The Pfister Hotel
The Pfister Hotel has been the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee for over 120 years. Originally built in 1893 by businessman Guido Pfister, it was the most lavish hotel of its time. The hotel’s storied elegance had faded following World War II, until 1962, when Ben Marcus, founder of The Marcus Corporation purchased this grand hotel out of bankruptcy. The Marcus family renovated and restored the hotel to its original glory, adding convention facilities, a parking garage and 23-story guest tower. The Pfister Hotel remains home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world, and recently unveiled an interactive augmented reality tour of pieces in this impressive collection.

Today the Pfister Hotel continues its tradition of gracious service and impeccable style, and has been recognized for 39 consecutive years by AAA as a Four-Diamond property. The hotel is also an ongoing member of two prestigious organizations, the Historic Hotels of America and Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. The Pfister Hotel is located at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Milwaukee. More information and updates on the hotel can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thePfisterHotel and on Twitter (@PfisterHotel).
