How to Get Out of Your Winter Rut

By Jenny Muslin, Member of the Chicago Parent Blog Network

If cold temperatures are keeping you indoors and making you stir crazy, these Chicago winter lifesavers will get your family out of their winter rut!

Go sledding

Chicago’s definitely got snow, but it also has supreme hills for sledding. Head to A. Montgomery Ward Park for sledding and a hot chocolate afterward at Peet’s Coffee next door. The Soldier Field Sledding Hill is always popular, as is Warren Park. In the suburbs, Evanston’s James Park, Glenview’s Flick Park and Riverwalk Sled Hill at Rotary Hill in Naperville are can’t-miss destinations.

Snatch an adrenaline rush

Let the daredevil in you fly! If your kids (or you!) like to live on the wild side, iFLY’s indoor skydiving is safe but full of thrills. After you train with an instructor and slip into the provided gear, you’ll head into the flight chamber where you’ll feel like you’re freefalling through the air. Locations in Lincoln Park, Rosemont and Naperville, and suitable for flyers 3 and up.

Get away, but not too far

No need to hop on an airplane for a much needed getaway. Seek refuge at an all-season Midwest resort like Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. Kids will sleep well after enjoying the 50,000-square-foot water park as well as the game arcade, cinema and activity center. The grown-ups can kick back at the resort’s full-service spa or restaurant.

Sleep, maybe

Of course you can visit The Field Museum during the day, but what if you could have a sleepover among the dinosaurs? Experience a real “night at the museum” during one of the museum’s Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights for families with kids ages 6-12. Explore the exhibits by flashlight, take a hands-on workshop and watch a 3D movie in the museum’s theater. Jan. 20 and 27; Feb. 10 and 17; March 3, 10 and 17; April 1 and 7; and May 12.

Lose yourself

Emerald City Theatre takes on “The Snowy Day and Other Stories,” adapted from the bestselling books by Ezra Jack Keats. Kids 3-9 will love hearing about a young boy who explores his city after the first snowfall. Feb. 4-May 6, tickets start at $19. Apollo Theater, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.

Roll with it

With locations in both the city and ‘burbs, Pinstripes is a family-friendly spot that will entertain your kiddos whether they’re 3 or 12. Bowling and bocce ball are the main attractions. There are plenty of kid-friendly options on the menu, too, so be sure to stay for lunch at the restaurant or have your meal delivered right to your bowling area.
